What kind of food do you serve?
We serve foods that are traditionally
associated with the Eastern Mediterranean. The foods of Greece, Turkey,
and the Arabic countries.
Is your food spicy hot?
No. Foods from the Eastern Mediterranean
tend to feature spices that add flavor (cinnamon, cardamom, cumin, mint,
cloves, nutmeg) not heat.
Do you have vegetarian selections?
Yes! In fact we are frequently recommended
to vegetarians as a place they can get delicious and unusual dishes.
Do you have vegan foods?
Yes! Many of our vegetarian selections
are actually vegan. Check with your waiter as you order (and your waiter
will be happy to check with the cook), just to be sure that nothing is
substituted while the dish was being prepared.
What kind of customers frequent Khalil's?
We get a wide variety of customers.
Some are devoted fans who have been dining with us since the 1970s. Many
are visitors from out of town who are looking for the special experiences
that Pittsburgh has to offer. Many others are students form the universities
who are looking for an international experience, or a reminder of home.
Over the years, we have carefully developed
a profile of the kind of people that enjoy coming to Khalil's. In
general they are cleaner, smarter, better dressed, more generous,
better educated, wealthier, softer spoken, more polite, friendlier, and
more fun loving than those who don't.
What kind of occasion is Khalil's appropriate
for?
Khalil's is a great place for
a date, a proposal, a birthday, or a special anniversary. It is also a
fine place to make an ordinary day of the week into a special occasion.
What is the atmosphere like?
We have decorative and architectural
elements that have been imported from Syria and Egypt. We play music softly
in the background, so you can not only hear yourself think, but also what
the other person is saying to you.
Can we bring our own wine?
Because we have a bar, the Pennsylvania
Liquor Control Board forbids customers from bringing in their own alcohol.
Do you accept credit cards?
Yes! Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and
American Express are all welcome.

Is there a dress code?
We encourage a casual to formal mode
of dress.
Do we need a reservation?
When in doubt, make a reservation.
The process is simple: give us your name, a contact number, the number
of people in your party, and your preference for smoking or non-smoking.
It is a good idea to mention any special needs (e.g. a high chair for a
child) when you make your reservation. Besides, it's always nice to get
treated like a VIP, so give us a call!
Should we tip the waitstaff?
Yes! As is the case in most US restaurants,
the waitstaff works for tips. In order to make a decent living, a waiter/waitress
has to earn around 17% per table. If you really enjoyed your service, tip
some more (20% is sufficient to win you everlasting gratitude, and to mark
you as a generous, prosperous patron), if you were unhappy, tip less. You
should never tip under 5% unless you recieved no service at all.
What are your policies for the Enjoyment and Enjoy
Cards?
We use the same policies that are posted
in the book that comes with the cards. Please do not ask you waiter to
bend the rules just for you--the discount we provide is already very
generous (up to $10 off). If you need to save more, we suggest you eat
at home.
Do you deliver?
Not at the moment, but we'll happy
to put together a take-out package for you. We do cater events with at
least a 1 week notice. Give us a call!
Do you have a bar?
Yes! Our bar is a beautiful piece which
dates to 1846. We have a nice selection of wines, a good stock of liqueurs,
and the fixings for most traditional cocktails.
What are you hours of operation?
We are closed on Mondays. Tuesday through
Sunday, we open for dinner at 4 pm and close at 10 pm. On the weekend,
we frequently stay open until 11 pm.
Is there parking available?
Yes! We have a parking lot that can
hold about 30 cars.
Can we reserve a private room?
Our smoking room can be reserved for
small groups (10-20 guests). Our main dining hall can seat about
70. Our banquet hall holds over 100. VIPs may make arrangements to reserve
a room or the whole restaurant for a private, intimate evening. Please
make your booking at least one month in advance.
